"Direct selling is the same as a pyramid scheme."

Pyramid schemes are illegal in India and have no genuine product. Direct selling is a legal, regulated industry governed by the Direct Selling Rules 2021. The key difference: in direct selling, income comes from selling real products, not from recruiting others.

Myth

"Only people at the top of the network make money."

In legitimate direct selling, any seller at any level earns based on their own personal sales performance. IDSA member companies are required to publish income disclosure statements so potential sellers can make informed decisions before joining.

Myth

"You have to buy large amounts of inventory to start."

Forcing new sellers to purchase large mandatory inventory is a red flag — and prohibited under IDSA's Code of Ethics. Legitimate direct selling companies allow sellers to order products based on actual demand from their customer base.

Myth

"Direct selling products are overpriced and low quality."

IDSA member companies' products are required to meet BIS, FSSAI, and other relevant quality standards. Many companies invest heavily in R&D. Products are premium-priced because they include the personalised service of a trained direct seller — not because of poor value.

Direct selling in India operates within a robust legal framework designed to protect both consumers and direct sellers.

Direct Selling Rules, 2021

Direct selling in India was initially guided by the Direct Selling Guidelines, 2016 (implemented around 2017) issued by the Government of India. These guidelines were introduced to provide clarity to states and help distinguish legitimate direct selling businesses from pyramid and money circulation schemes. However, these were advisory in nature and not legally enforceable, which led to inconsistent implementation across different states.


To address these challenges, the government introduced the Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021 under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The new rules were brought in to create a uniform, legally binding framework for the direct selling industry across India.
